Craving something wild and memorable in Yogyakarta? Set your sights on the Mount Merbabu Sunrise Hike—a midnight trek that’s more than just a walk up a mountain. It’s a full-on adventure, and you’ll feel it from the moment you step into the cool night air.
You still get your day, and all the magic happens at night.
The trail winds through forests and across wild landscapes—a perfect mix of excitement and beauty. Our guides know their stuff. They’ll keep you safe, point out cool plants and animals, and share a few stories along the way.
When we hit the summit, you’ll find yourself surrounded by a sky bursting with color as the sun comes up. Take your time snapping photos or stand there and soak it all in. It’s peaceful and seriously stunning.
We’ll stop at basecamp for a much-needed breakfast to refuel, then make our way back toward Yogyakarta. Expect to return around 10 or 11 am.
That’s the end of the trip, but the memories? Those stick around.
If you’re just starting, this hike can feel pretty tough. The trail has some steep bits and challenging sections, so you’ll want to have a decent fitness level and a little hiking experience under your belt. That being said, you won’t be on your own—our guides are there to help you out every step of the way.
We usually kick things off around midnight, with pickup from Yogyakarta between 10 and 11 at night, depending on where you’re staying. The goal is to reach the summit in time for sunrise, which really is worth the early start. The schedule might shift a bit if the weather acts up or if the group’s pace changes, but we’ll keep you in the loop.
Wear sturdy hiking shoes, and bring a lightweight backpack with your essentials. Pack a change of clothes, any meds you need, and don’t forget your camera—the views are something you’ll want to remember. If the weather gets tricky, we have raincoats and trekking poles waiting for you.
Absolutely. Safety comes first. Our guides know the trail well and carry first aid kits, just in case. Before you set off, we’ll run through a safety briefing so everyone knows what to expect and feels relaxed.
We don’t set a strict age limit, but we recommend kids be at least 10, and they need to come with an adult. Since the hike can be physically demanding, we want everyone to stay safe and healthy. If you’re worried about health issues, it’s always a good idea to check with your doctor before booking.
